Android apps that steal your files

Cybersecurity researchers have discovered that more than 90 Android apps available on the Google Play Store contain spyware that can steal your personal data and download files from your device without your knowledge.

These applications have unfortunately been installed more than 300 million times. The spyware hides in an advertising SDK.

The latter is used by more than 90 Android applications that seem legitimate and offer users mini-games, tasks, or rewards to maintain their interest day after day. In reality, these apps collect sensitive data from infected devices.

This spyware, dubbed SpinOk, first checks whether the device is in a virtual environment, such as a sandbox, which could be used by researchers to analyze its behavior. Then it connects to a remote server to download a list of URLs that display the mini-games expected by users.

While the latter is playing, SpinOk acts in the background to perform several malicious actions, such as listing files in directories and downloading them.

The spyware can thus steal images, videos, documents, or banking data stored on the device. It can also modify the clipboard to intercept passwords, credit card numbers, or cryptocurrency payments.
