WhatsApp finally gets a privacy mode: "Chat Lock"

WhatsApp is finally getting a privacy mode with Chat Lock, a new feature that allows you to hide certain conversations and lock access to them. A way to hide very private chats.

Instant messaging already offers many options to guarantee the confidentiality of the content of its users, such as ephemeral messages, the possibility of blocking screenshots for certain messages, or the sending of ephemeral voices – they can only be listened to. once.

WhatsApp finally gets a privacy mode

In a blog post published on May 15, 2023, Meta announces the addition of Chat Lock, a function that allows you to lock access to certain conversations, and even to hide them.

Thus, this new protection system makes it possible to block access to messages and multimedia content "photos, videos, and documents" from discussions using a "PIN code or biometric recognition fingerprint sensor or facial recognition". An additional layer of security to protect your sensitive data.

It can be particularly useful for people who share their device with a family member or whose spouse is a little too intrusive.

It is available from May 16 on Android and iOS applications. Meta plans to add more options for Chat Lock in the coming months, such as the ability to lock WhatsApp-related devices and create custom passwords for chats different from that of the smartphone.

lock their private chats individually

To lock access to a conversation, select the discussion and press "Chat Lock". Once this is done, the conversation is moved to a separate section containing all private conversations.

To open it, you have to pull down on the inbox and enter your PIN code or go through a biometric recognition. Not only are the messages hidden, but so are the media files "photos, videos, audio files.." in the chat, which are not automatically saved to the device's gallery.

However, this new option is more practical since it allows you to lock individual chats rather than the entire application.
